Today, in the world of home décor, the single most consumed product is textiles. Every other thing in a room is textile, from cushion covers to carpets to curtains. Textile is an umbrella industry that covers all types of fabrics, fibers, filaments, threads, etc. With the passing of time, to stay trendy, the industry continues to come up with innovative ideas. Knitting, knotting, crocheting, weaving, and non-woven are types of fabric manufacturing.

In home décor, textiles are extensively used for both functional and decorative purposes. Carpets, upholstery, bedspreads, towels, napkins, curtains, fireproofing, and wall-floor covering are a few of the textile examples used in home décor. The aesthetic of the fabrics depends on their material, texture, color, design, and a lot of other factors that determine their vibe and value.

Let’s delve into textiles and their role in the world of home décor.

  1.   Type of fabric or material:
  • Natural fibers- cotton, wool, linen, and silk are common examples of natural fibers. They are also durable and eco-friendly compared to other types of fabrics.
  • Man-made or synthetic polyester- nylon is a great example of such fabric. This is versatile and affordable.
  • Blended fabrics- This is a great choice for fabrics that have quality synthetic fabric, such as affordability and durability, yet provide the comfort of natural material.

  1. Texture:

The texture of the fabric is crucial in home décor. Its smoothness, plushness, and roughness add depth to the material.

  • Embroidery- This is a technique to decorate the fabric. This turns a simple fabric into a work of art.
  • Jacquard fabric – This is a type of fabric that has complex patterns and designs on it.
  • Dyeing – This is a solution to change the color of natural fabric to any color.

  • Printed fabric – digital printing, 3D printing, and screen printing are a few printing methods to create complex pattern printing on the fabric.
  1. Functionality:
  • Maintenance- Home textiles should be easy to maintain and clean because of their rough use.
  • Durability- The durability of the material should be good since changing the home décor often is not affordable.
  • Adaptability– Depending on the season, the kind of fabric used in home décor is different. Thicker, heavier, and softer in winter and lightweight and simple in summer.
  1. Patterns:

There is a wide range of designs and patterns available in the market. Geometric, traditional, abstract, and floral are some of the trendy choices of patterns.

  1. Color palette:

From neutral tones, pastels, shimmers, glitters, and contrast tones, the palette to choose from is infinite. The demand for the colors depends on the trend in the market. Right now, the pastel and neutral shades are eye-catching. The beautiful tones of brown and beige shades and some yellow or green pop colors look amazing in the spaces.

  1. Application and styling:

Styling makes a huge difference in the appearance of the same space.

  • Proportion and scale – It is very important to be mindful of what kind of patterns and their size to use in a particular setting that enhances the product’s simplicity rather than overpowering.

  •  Balance- Since textiles play a big role in home décor, it is important to balance the design with other design aspects of the interior, such as wall colors, furniture, etc.

  1. Sustainability:

In today’s environmentally conscious world, it is important to be mindful of the usage of textiles and have a sustainable approach to them.

  • Energy and water efficiency– choosing a manufacturer that practices energy-efficient production and water-saving techniques to reduce the overall environmental footprint.
  • Certificates and standards- Global organic textile standards and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certificates ensure that fabric meets the bare minimum environmental and social criteria.
  • Durability and longevity- investing in high-quality material is important because it reduces the need for frequent replacement.
  • Local production- supporting local artisans helps reduce transportation costs and emissions as well as ensure fair labor practices.
  • Low-impact dyes and printing- dyeing causes water pollution; using natural dyes instead of conventional dyes can keep the pollution under control and also reduce energy consumption.
